Sometime during the engagement on July 15th, 1944, William H. Butterworth was severely wounded in action, likely by either machine gun fire or artillery. He died later that day in a French hospital. His remains were recovered and he was buried in Basse – Normandie, France in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. William was awarded the Purple Heart for the wounds he received at the Battle of Saint Lo. His mother received the money for his being killed in the war, but his father resurfaced for long enough to take most of it from his mother. He is buried at Plot E Row 17 Grave 40 at the Normandy Cemetery.
